Advancing equine sports medicine in Estonia: Research and international collaboration in action
Our clinic continues to make great strides in providing the best care for Baltic horses, thanks to international collaboration and cutting-edge research.
Recently, we had the honor of hosting Dr. Felipe Costa, an ISELP-certified equine veterinarian specializing in musculoskeletal conditions. Together with Dr. Felipe Corrêa, head of our equine clinic, they conducted an intensive four-day course in Equine Sports Medicine. This hands-on training helped improve the skills of EMÜ veterinary students and staff.
In addition, new research on a rare equine neck injury has expanded our knowledge. The study detailed the treatment of a horse with severe tracheal and esophageal injuries using complex procedures like tracheostomy (a temporary opening in the windpipe to assist breathing) and esophagostomy (an opening in the esophagus for feeding). These techniques, combined with surgical drainage, successfully restored the horse’s health.
These advancements highlight our commitment to improving veterinary care through both collaboration and research.
